About Spray Tanning
In essence, a spray tan is "tanning" the top layer of your skin and the life of your tan depends on how long it takes for your body to replace this layer of skin. For most of us, this cycle takes about 7 days but varies greatly, depending on how hydrated your skin is. Similarly the more moisturized and smooth your skin is, the better the spray tan will take.
Firstly don't be deterred by spray tan horror stories!! We've all had them or heard about them, but spray tanning has come a long way since it was first developed. MagicTan is well known for providing one of the best tanning results and looks so natural no one will guess it's a spray tan!
MagicTan developed the revolutionary VersaSpa Spray Booth and the complementary retail products to help the tanning product cover your skin better and to ensure your tan lasts as long as possible.
Tips for preparing for your spray tan
Drink water!
- You've heard it 100's of times but drinking plenty of water hydrates your skin and really has the most dramatic effect on how well your tan takes.
Exfoliate
- A week before you have your spray tan, begin exfoliating daily with a loofah and/or an exfoliating scrub. A product designed specifically for spray tanning is the MagicTan Body Polish available at foxy brown for $24.95 for 200ml.
Moisturise
- Start moisturising your skin on a daily basis. Two products specifically designed for this purpose are the MagicTan Body Mousse and MagicTan Extend. Neither of these products contain AHAs, a chemical found in many cosmetics and lotions and which can strip your newly acquired tan! Read more about AHAs here.
- The Body Mousse acts as a full-body moisture mask and is used whilst in the shower. You simply step out from the water stream and coat your body with the lavish foam from head to toe, then rinse off. It leaves your skin feeling beautifully soft and subtle. Only $24.95 for 236ml.
- Follow this procedure by applying MagicTan Extend after you have dried off from the shower. MagicTan Extend contains a very light tanning component but most importantly, contains essential ingredients to hydrate your skin helping your tan to look better and stay on for longer. Tan Extend comes in 2 sizes - a very handy purse size of 60ml for $10 and the 400ml great value at only $24.95.
Visit foxy brown for a trial tan
- We recommend a trial spray tan quite simply for your peace of mind; so you can stop worrying about how the spray tan will look on the big day. This can be done months or weeks before your wedding or special event but it is advisable to leave at least one week between your tan and your actual tan.

Preparation on the day of your tan
- On the day of your tan, exfoliate with a product such as the MagicTan Exfoliator Scrub which does not contain any oils and avoid using any lotions, creams, make up, perfumes or anti-perspirants as these can "block" the tan from absorbing into your skin.
- Wear loose fitting clothes and either thongs or sandals.
Following your tan
Do
- Shower but only after 4-6 hours
- Regularly use products such as the MagicTan Mousse and MagicTan Extend to keep skin hydrated and extend the life of your tan.
Don't
- Soak in a bath or spa or take long, hot showers.
- Exfoliate or take part in activities that will do this (such as lying directly on the sand at the beach) as this will remove the layer of your skin that has been tanned.
- Use sunscreens that contain AHAs as they will remove your tan. However, a sunscreen should still be worn during sun exposure as your spray tan will not act as a sunscreen or protect you from UV's.
- Shave as this will remove the layer of your skin that has been tanned.

What is the best order for tanning, shaving and/or waxing?
The best way is to shower and/or wax before your tan, but not immediately prior to. Ideally a wax or shave should be done 12 hours before your tan, allowing enough time for the hair follicle to close. Open pores or hair follicles will absorb the tan and it is best to allow freshly waxed skin enough time to and for any irritation or redness to calm down.
A bikini or Brazilian wax can be performed immediately following a spray tan but it is not recommended, as the wax may not be able to grip the hair as easily. Don't wax your legs, arms or anywhere on the face following a spray tan either as this will remove the tan that you have just applied! At Foxy Brown we are more than happy to help you find the right solution for your individual tanning and waxing needs.
Solariums and shaving/waxing
A solarium must not be used for 48 hours following a wax as the skin will be tender and more susceptible to absorbing uv's.
Also, you should wait 24 hours following a solarium before you receive a wax.

Spray Tanning and perfume, makeup and lotions
Perfume, deodorant, makeup and body lotion should all be removed before getting your spray tan. Some of these products can act as a barrier against the tanning solution and leave white patches where they have been. It is best to remove them with a wet-wipe (provided) before tanning.
Solariums and perfume, makeup and lotions
Certain chemicals in some perfumes, make up and lotions can cause your skin to be more sensitive to UV light and can cause redness and itching during and after exposure. You should always remove any such products either before arriving for your solarium session or with the aid of a wet wipe (provided) before your session.
Solariums and Tanning Accelerators
If you would like to use a lotion to assist with your tanning, you should only use those that have been developed specifically for this purpose and which will not have adverse effects. Tanning accelerators are available in a range of options from those with sensitive skin to those who want a tingle or a bronzer.
Tanning lotions not only assist with accelerating and intensifying your tan they also contain many special ingredients such as Argan oil, Shea butter and Sweet almond oil to keep your skin hydrated, Grape seed oil and Pine bark for anti-aging and citric acid ester which is perspiration and smell resisting.
Foxy Brown can assist you in choosing a tanning accelerator appropriate for your skin type and tanning needs.
